Want to make a fast RTS game? Some interesting Assets.

I was searching throught the Asset Store and in front page in offer i found the [uRTS];



If you always liked to make a Total War kind of strategy game, it seems the choice. Great reviews, a free version, and a free to play game on facebook to check how it looks.

Of course, sweeping to home and making a Sci-Fi RTS, perfect to use with our Strategy Packs assets released the last two years:



Talking of them, I'm working right now in some Strategy Assets.. but far from the ground, and you'll see the first previews soon. Also I had the project to make some Historic Strategy Assets, but they'll have to wait a bit.

Galactic Battlefare Ancient Relics: Recapitulation for losts & founds.

As I introduced GBF:Ancient Relics to IndieDB (a web for promoting indie games, indie developers get the hint!), I wrote them a good introduction to 7Ye and GBF:AR. And as I'm a kind (but brutal and insidious) good man, I'm gonna reproduce it here.

Where to start...
(From the beginning) 
Ten years ago I began to write and sketch a big Space Opera universe; a universe where political, racial and territorial conflict between (and inside) different governments (three very different human factions and more than ten huge alien empires) were deep, with background, with personality, and really interesting to make a Role-playing Rulebook. (A big one). Was a colossal job, so I worked on it every now and then. The years past and I discovered my hobby to make free computer games. (Adventure games in this time). I didn't see any better idea than to port Galactic Battlefare Universe to this games (If you want to now about that, read the developer blog!). Those games were nothing special, apart from the love I put in them. (but was GREAT to make the art for the games, I've been always a fan of pixel art and got a way to express it).
(Recently)
Years past away, finished my career and thought; "Gak, it's time to make something good, something special that I can give to sci-fi lovers like me to remember and make it keep growing". Me and some collaborators decided to start Seven Years Entertainment and begin to work in some commercial games. In the start of the year (2014), we worked hard making our first prototype, Galactic Battlefare: Pangaia. At first it seems ambitious. But wasn't; or better said; Wasn't so much ambitious to compete in its genre (sci-fi Rpg/FPS). The story was good (Damm, 10 years of Background story making), but the game not yet that good. 
We take some steps back, worked on little projects (myself, made some silly android games (One of them is unreleased, Hearts Date Club, but is a good one that will see the light soon or later)....
 (And Now)
Now is time; Some months ago I started programming and making the graphics of this new and shinny GBF: Ancient Relics. From week to week, the concept grow stronger and defined, and now I can proudly announce that is the game I always wanted to do, and moreover, the best first game to commercially distribute showing the Galactic Battlefare Universe.  
And what is GBF: Ancient Relics? 
That's easy. It's a Sci-fi-3d-Retro-Dungeon-Crawler with Complex-Pirates-and-merchants-simulator with Turn-Tactical-Combat. Ahem...

In tabletop roleplay we say one thing: "the game is about the story, or the game is about the place". And this game, is about "the place". And the place are 3 playable subsectors full of dozen of systems (full of more than half-hundred planets) where you will explore, hunt treasures, knew the flora and fauna of terran space and neighbour aliens, trade cargo and resources in a rogue trader way, build a team of charismatic companions and upgrade your ship to 'fend yourselves and fly further and bolder. 
Too much to explain; What I strongly recommend is watching the videos. They're mildly alpha right now, but a lot of things will be here in the final build. In the first video I updated to IndieDB we have the Character Creation in a RPG retro way that affects gameplay, Deep and long dialogs with most of NPCs, the Eye of the Beholder retro kind of movement...
Soon enough, I'll upload the video showing the space charts, where you will plan your navigation and discover all the playable systems, and I really think you're gonna like it. 
I'm not sure right now how I'll update the news of the game, I was using a devblog until now. It's time to think and regroup!
I'll keep making this devblogs here of course, and other kind of post, if you start to know me a bit. It's just I don't know how to update the news in IndieDB exactlly, apart of just "state updates" and some images.

GBF Ancient Relics Devdiary #3 - Character Creation and Dialogues.

We have been without publishing three weeks; The reason:

1) Alar is now a daddy. His firstborn is here and have time to him and to work in the game, but not so much to also publish often.

2) Had been working hard in the basic systems in of the game, and make graphics, enough to show you a good video.

I have to write the transcription of the video here, 'cause the english accent is very terrible (I'm sorry for your ears), and I kill two birds in one shot so you can read what I explain in the video if you cannot hear it in the moment.

3) Big news here. This game is gonna be Huge, and you'll hear about it. Right now is very alpha, making some basic systems, but I'm proud of the work i'd done 'till now.

It's a skill game, you have the hard job of a King in modern times; Sitting behind a expensive desk, sealing documents, and signing diplomas. (While I was making the game, I'm waiting that my dear new King Felipito VI sign my Philosophy University Diploma.


The same night I released the crappy Lil'Bunny Race, I started working in this Idea.The programming has been like 3 nights and an afternoon, the graphics, the weekend. The graphics provide the narrative thread of the story of this King in the fictional Country of Pravia, from 1980 to 2030, in an age of profuse change of mentality about our government and the way the high caste see life.

My country (Catalonia, Spain) lives in interesting times, but seems not interesting enough. The "silent bulk" of the population wants the monarchic system to persevere, they say. Anyway, I made this homage to the royalty in general , that had make so much for all countries in the late centuries.(Irony off).

I put a lot of love in this game, my first 100% from scratch programming, sound elaborating (The volume is not quite accurate yet, Hope to fix that in future updates), and take a lot of fun making the irreverent graphics.

Advise for Noob App Developers like me - Run rabbit, I mean, Fly, Bunny!!

So, Yesterday I got this silly idea; Make a tap and fly Bunny inspired Hot Lander version.
Well, two days, it's done. I looked over the ranking contraries in Google Apps.

My new game (game, cause is too silly to be called a game), it's called Lil'Bunny Race (Little Bunny Race). So, she flies (my bunny is a girl.. that's a strange phrase), don't run, but well. When you search "Bunny Race" in Google Play, you directly stomp into more than 40 games of Little and Cute bunnies/rabbits running.

Yes, that what they do; Bunnies that run. They run in 2d, horizontal scrolling, vertically scrolling the screen, or run in 3d. They are rabbits, and they run. more than 40 games in the first 60 ranking results.

Ok, you know, infinite run/fly scrollers get famous for Temple Run, Flappy birds, and that sort of things (in mobile, In PC I can only thing of the fantastic, addictive and VERY HARD BIT TRIP RUNNER, (greeeeat game, awesome music).

Then, On trillion Indie developers, little Mobile money maker companies, and just Oportunity squashers, say "Oh gosh Oh gosh Oh gosh come come come we're gonna make a run game of every animal in the f****ng royal animal kingdom!"

And this is the result. Me, personally, Alarconte, not the little company I represent, 7Ye, I just made another silly game (yes, is a re-skin of Hotlander, with the menus more friendly), to check how weekends, ranking, active installs, total installs, etc, affect apps. (And yes, Advertising Networks) 'Cause there is no much information out there. Yes, there is a LOT information out there, but fraking hard to find (And you know why, Gooog..Gosh!).

But I have to fight to be visible among 40 cute little bunnies and rabbits that run and flight to get carrots, moneny or wathever. THERE ARE GOOD GAMES between them, much better than mine. (but well, none of them have a so sexy bunnylady like mine ;)).

What was the point of this dissertation? Make an original game, like I'm doing with Hearts Date Club (A bit of auto-flattering here, I guess). Put it a good name. Don't try to outrank the well established. Make a game that don't have competitors, and all you have left to do is Marketing. More on the practical aspect of this another day, right now, here you have, as promised!!

Two days relax - Good things come to those who wait

Yesterday I thought. "meh, I can just use two days to launch another silly game like the last one , checking in that fashion more about Google Play discoverability (or whatever), ups and downs, ranking etc.

I thought, "meh, Just a Hot Lander re-skin will work.". A voice in my head told me that Socrates said "Remember, what is unbecoming to do is also unbecoming to say". And I just thought "meh..."

Today I was preparing the cradle for my first-born, that is coming very soon, So I've done 1/3 or 1/2 of all the graphics of the game. I hope tomorrow I have time to retrofit Hot Lander's programming and launch the new silly game.

I'm a long way from making a little money from mobile games, not even finished the first serious game (Hearts Date Club) but It's worth the effort; I just wanna get established a little in the publishing-games-for-little-coins-world to get some real free time to work in "big" (or at least interesting, time consuming to program) PC-Games.

At least I'm happy making a new "kind" of graphics (In the time of the last test of the university I began to make Galactic Battlefare Universe Art, in a different way, but that will be the thing for another day), at least for two days. Let me show you a sneak peek; (It's an extra, nobody interesting, but you can see what other "kind" of theme...

PS: Some blog-testers says that I have too many images and little text. I always thought that One image is worth more than thousand words... Now the only thing I know is that I don't know nothing (thank you Socrates, again)

Final Thought: While I was in university, the most gaming-creative productive moments were when I have a lot of university work. Now that I ended, I have a real need to put me short-term objectives. The first, this little game in two days. If isn't published on friday, I'll let you slap me on the wrist, ripping me to shreds, tweak my ears, or whatever expression is what I'm really trying to use ;)

Sneak Peeks from the past - Finishing Hearts Date Club's Art

Well, that's uncomfortable. When I made this video I thought I was going to work non-stop at least 10 months in my prime project, his name, GBF Pangaia. (More on that in a near future). I made this promo video made with the early engine of my game for a game that is going to release very soon (this time for real, Clash of Gnomes, from Pop Pixel Games). My video has misspells, some quirky placement errors (I made the whole video twitching the game in one afternoon)... But HIITYTS! (Here It Is To You To See!)


And, it's uncomfortable because as I shifted temporally to short-to-do mobile games and got little extra time because of personal issues, I'm not able to deliver the estimated launch date, Fall 2014.

But the good news are... I'm learning a lot to make it even better than I was making it, changing some focus about the graphics, re-imagined the way to make cut-scenes...

Well, talking about changes about a game that you don't nothing doesn't give you any new perspective. But the thing here is... Every choice in the path, every stone in the road make you stop and broad your horizon. The life of the Indie developer can be harsh, at the least, terrible at the worst; But there is always hope for whom how perseveres.

In the bright side of the life, today I finished the last of all high-res graphics for Hearts Date Club. 
In less than 2 weeks I'll have enough spare time to start finishing all the programming. And if I don't have too many problems (fingers crossed)... Well, better not to jinx it.

PS: These days a have a Lot, Lot, Lot things to do, my post will grow larger and bolder as I finish disturbing and overwhelming (power overwhelming!) temporal priorities. (and they don't have nothing to do with tachyons)

Hearts Date Club - Hands On



A month from release (estimated, I have some temporal priorities, unfortunately), has 93 high quality 1042x682 screen art pictures. They are mostly about game characters, buildings and improvements. 76 depicts the twelve main characters in various situations/dresses/attitudes. 

And there is a lot, lot of bonus artwork, that will not being released within the game. At least right now, or in the android version (success or searching of opportunities may have me make bigger versions). I'll share with you some of the bonus art. For the real artwork, you'll have to see the game (relax, it will be totally free, no time constrains or compulsive purchases).

This piece of artwork cannot be directly related to the game; It's just a fun wink. She is used like an "extra" in a building, but I've been re-watching certain tv-show and I'd like to take a close capture of her. I call her, in a friendly way, "freckles". I guess asking you who is based on, it's an insult to intelligence :P
